Photo App Online

Polarize is an iPhone photo editing app that does one thing and one thing only: it creates instant, Polaroid-style images from photos on your iPhone. You can't even use this app to share the photo with friends through Facebook or Twitter, a feature in many other iPhone photography apps. No, all this does is create Polaroid-style images — and very nice ones, too, though with one glaring flaw.

Polarize Summary

  • Create basic Polaroid-style images
  • Take new photos in-app or use a photo from the camera roll
  • Add a caption to the new Polaroid image or leave it blank

The Good...

  • Simple and easy to use
  • Fast processing
  • No complex menus or settings
  • Produces images with high contrast and high color saturation

The Bad...

  • Inferior image resolution — images suitable only for on-screen viewing at best
  • No options for sharing photos with friends, so you must go to another app
  • No adjustments for the intensity or type of effects applied

Using Polarize

As noted above, Polarize is very easy to use. From the app's main screen you have two choices: take a new photo within the app or pick an already-existing photo from your iPhone's camera roll. Once you have a photo, Polarize will present you with your Polaroid-style image.

From this point you can "tag" your image with a caption (with only one font available), discard it, or save it to your iPhone's camera roll. Unfortunately, what you save has so little resolution that aside from looking at it on your iPhone, Twitter, or an email, there isn't much you can do with it.

If high contrast and high color saturation are what you're looking for when it comes to retro-style image effects, this is the app for you — on this point, Polarize is superior to all the other Polaroid-style effects and editors that I've tried.

I like Polarize, I really do. Just about all the photos I've tried with Polarize turn out well and some turn out very well — I don't think I can say that about any other app. The only thing that's keeping me from giving it a high rating is the low resolution. If you don't care about resolution, though, then consider Polarize a 4 or even 5 star app.

I really hope Christopher Comair updates his iPhone app to provide for some choices in resolution — including especially full resolution.
